We introduce the concept of virtual alternating links and show how it is closely related to the topological expansion of matrix models. We present a generalized flyping conjecture and investigate the corresponding renormalization procedure. We discuss recent progress (by Saleur et al) on classification of O(n) symmetric conformal field theories and how it relates to asymptotic enumeration. Finally, we describe work by computer to check some of these conjectures.
