Canonical Decompositions of groups and manifolds

In joint work with Swarup, we have produced a purely algebraic analogue of the topological JSJ-decomposition. This is not the first such result, but it is the first which is a true generalisation of the topological result. I will discuss this work and some interesting special cases.
