Geometry and Topology in Group Theory

Student-Run Research Seminar

Speaker: Gabriel Amos, UC Davis
Location: 2112 MSB
Start time: Wed, Oct 8 2008, 12:10PM

Groups are by definition algebraic objects, but the tools used to study them come from all branches of mathematics. In particular, ideas from topology and geometry are now widely used to study the structure of groups. In this talk, I will describe what these techniques are and (hopefully) give examples of the theorems one can prove using them. This will be an introductory talk; no advanced knowledge of topology and geometry necessary.
