In this talk I will illustrate how elementary knowledge in algebraic geometry is useful to in the foundations of optimization theory. In the first application I will show how to use Hilbert's Nullstellensatz to provide optimality certificates and in the second example, I will describe how the geometry of curves is related to the efficiency of interior point methods.
